Living Out Archetypes - Who Do You Need To Be In Each Moment?

As of recently, I’ve been wearing many different hats.

I’m a college quarterback, psychology student, entrepreneur, podcaster, writer, product builder, marketer, son, grandson, raver, astrology nerd, psychedelic explorer, and spiritual seeker.

On any given day, I shapeshift between various characters.

From 6-9am, I’m a writer and product builder.

From 9am-3pm, I’m a psychology student.

From 3pm-5pm, I’m a college quarterback.

At 5pm, I become a singer in the choir.

At night, I open myself up to whatever the universe calls me to be.

This Saturday, I went out to a bar with all my high school friends and became “one of the boys,” and after, I went to a rave and became a free-spirited dancer.

I used to think something was “wrong” with me for having so many interests.

On the surface, someone with so many different aspects of their life comes across as bipolar or having split-personality disorder.

But this couldn’t be further from the truth.

The deeper I’ve dove into psychology, spirituality, and myself, the more I realize these personalities and characters are simply different expressions of myself, and it is the combination of these characters that makes me who I am, an expression of my unique frequency.

My practice has been to not become solidified in the ego, and to not become rigid in one personality structure, but rather to adapt my character and shapeshift my ego to whatever arises in the moment.

This insight struck me yesterday as I went from writing in my car to walking into the weight room for a football lift.

I took a moment to intentionally shift my energy and my character from quiet, contemplative writer Jack to expressive, energetic, and college quarterback Jack.

These are not “different versions” of me, but different expressions of the same underlying essence.

Of course, underneath the personality that plays out in each moment, I’m still Jack, and underneath Jack, I am eternal, boundless spirit.

But as I’m playing multiple different characters in the world, I’m learning to shapeshift my character to embody the ideal archetype in each moment.

I’m not going to be the same esoteric spiritual astrology student in the football weight room as I am in the solitude of my own apartment, and I’ve realized that’s okay.

Sometimes, they intersect, like when I began talking to a teammate about his astrology chart (which is a peak experience), but oftentimes, they don’t, and that’s also great.

The different characters I get to play make life exciting, keep things fresh, and allow me to interact with reality from various different angles.

And, this perspective aligns with my own astrological chart as someone with a lot of Leo (leader), Sagitarrius (adventurous), and Aquarius (multidimensional) energy.

Archetypes

“Archetypes are like riverbeds which dry up when the water deserts them, but which it can find again at any time.” ~ Carl Jung - The Structure & Dynamics of the Psyche

Archetypes are universal, unconscious patterns of behavior, symbols, and roles that have shaped culture, psychology, and storytelling for thousands of years.

When we embody archetypes, we are playing out characters.

The entire human experience is a play or a movie, and each scene evokes a different role. The key to mastering this human experience is knowing which archetype to step into at any given moment.

In your family life, what is the archetype character you can embody? Imagine embodying the Caretaker, the Wise Mentor, or the Protector? How does this change how you show up with your family?

How does that archetype shift when you step into your business life? Do you become the Strategist, the Visionary, the Warrior, the Visionary, the Alchemist?

What about in your fitness life? Are you the Disciplined Athlete, the Stoic, the Gladiator, the Greek God?

And when you're studying? Can you put on the character of the Seeker, the Philosopher, the Scientist, or the Student of Life? How would this change your approach to reading, studying, or going down rabbit holes in the corners of the internet.

Rather than being locked into a single identity, we are fluid beings.

We are capable of embodying the archetype most aligned with the moment.

Choosing Your Character

Imagine you just got off of work and are going to the gym.

Most people go to the gym with the mindset of “I just have to do this to stay in shape.”

But this is a limiting mindset.

It can be so much more vitalizing and electric if you understand archetypes and choose to embody an ideal for that specific moment.

You can shift your character in the moment to that of an athlete, a warrior, or a Greek God, just by making an inner decision.

Imagine the difference in your workout going from someone who just goes to the gym to stay in shape, to a Greek God sculpting his other-worldly physique.

Imagine how much more motivated, empowered, and energized you’d feel.

What About Authenticity?

I can see one point of view that says intentionally embodying archetypes is inauthentic.

But the truth is we hold various different archetypes within our psyches at all times, and they naturally express themselves as the moment requires.

Eternal archetypes play out in an ever-changing dance across the course of our lives.

We are not fixed in one character, one role, or one personality, but rather a fluid expression of the archetypal forces within us, adapting to the needs of the moment while remaining true to our deeper essence, the spirit within us.

It is not inauthentic to shift into different archetypes and the moment shifts.

You don’t text your grandma the same way you text your best friend.

Because the situation is different, you embody a different character because you’re playing a different role.

Understanding and embodying different archetypes does not make you bipolar or inauthentic, but rather, it shows a deep wisdom of the world, the psyche, and human nature.

“The mature masculine is not a fixed state but a dynamic process of integrating and balancing the archetypes within us.” ~ A quote from King, Warrior, Magician, Lover

Who Do I Get To Be In This Moment?

You do not “need” to embody an archetype in each moment.

“Need” causes restriction and friction.

Rather, it is an open-ended question, one of infinite possibility.

You get to choose the ideal you want to embody.

This is why we look up to the ideals of Jesus, Hercules, Archangel Michael, Aristotle, or Steve Jobs.

They hint at themes lying within our own psyches that we can choose to live out in each moment, so long as we have the presence and awareness to step into the character fully.

As you go about your day, ask yourself,

“Who do I get to be in this moment?”

I’d be shocked if you don’t find your day to be much more energizing, exciting, and meaningful having asked yourself this question.

Thanks for reading.

I hope you found this insightful.

If you feel called, reply and let me know if this is something you already do, or if you thought of a specific archetype you want to embody.

I’d love to hear your thoughts.

Until next time,

Jack
